Delphi Health and Recreation Centre, Flesherton

A strong example of adaptive reuse, the Delphi is a complete leisure centre inserted into a disused former motel. The office area became a lounge; basement bar and storage area were reborn as exercise and weights rooms; the owner's upper apartment is now a daycare centre; the motel rooms were connected to provide a convenience shop, cardio room, three changerooms and offices for health professionals. Finally, a pre-engineered agricultural building was clipped to the rear, housing a badly needed, strongly-daylighted, 25 x 50' community pool and two spas. The telephone poles in front? Laid out in a wave form, they signal the presence of the pool, bound the outdoor eating area, establish the parking space rhythm, and give the complex much-needed visual prominence in its highway-side location.
